‘’Specialized nutrition to improve Clinical Outcomes in colorectal cancer PatiEnts (SCOPE)’’ project

2015-11-09

Approximately 15,000 patients per year are diagnosed with colorectal cancer (CRC) in the Netherlands. Treatment can consist of surgery, often complemented with radiation or systemic therapy. Patients with colorectal cancer often perceive weight loss, reduced muscle mass, fatigue and loss of appetite as a result of their disease and treatments. It is currently assumed that maintaining muscle mass and a well-balanced nutritional status after diagnosis contributes to the success of treatment.

Within SCOPE we investigate the association between nutrition and (change of) body composition during and after treatment in patients participating in PLCRC. Moreover, the association between body composition and treatment-related toxicities is studied. The aim of the study is to gain insights into factors which affect the success of treatment and quality of life of the patients. In addition to the regular measurements in the cohort, we will acquire information on nutritional intake from 1000 patients with use of food frequency questionnaires. Furthermore, we will collect detailed information on body composition from 100 patients, derived from CT scans. This research will create opportunities to optimally integrate nutrition into multidisciplinary disease management and supportive care of patients with CRC.

The SCOPE project is a collaboration between the UMC Utrecht, University of Utrecht and Nutricia Research.
