Perioperative Longitudinal stUdy of complications and long-Term Outcomes (PLUTO)

PLUTO aims to establish a comprehensive longitudinal data and biobank focusing on intermediate to high risk surgical patients. (So the focus of this study is not only on CRC patients). By studying (potentially new) biomarkers and clinical risk factors, we aim to promote the timely recognition and diagnosis of complications during the postoperative period, as well as improve pre- and perioperative risk stratification. To this end, adults scheduled for elective surgery, including major gastrointestinal, liver, pancreatic, lung, vascular and spinal surgery at the University Medical Center Utrecht, have been screened for inclusion in the study since 2020. Primary endpoints are postoperative infection, myocardial injury and delirium. In addition, the occurrence of acute renal injury, respiratory failure and atrial fibrillation is recorded and a long-term follow-up is performed. Patients remain under surveillance throughout their hospital stay and are visited by a PLUTO investigator.
